St Aloysius College is famed for achieving milestones in the field of education. Now the college has introduced ‘Civil Service Academy’ to provide quality training to civil service aspirants.
The Jesuit management at St Aloysius College (Autonomous) has ventured into this much needed area which will benefit the coastal city. The new UPSC training centre is named as St. Aloysius Institute of Civil Services.
When asked about the motivation to set-up such a venture, St Aloysius College principal, Fr (Dr) Praveen Martis, said that the coastal region is underrepresented when it comes to the civil services. Secondly, the coastal region does not have a full-fledged institute to impart quality training to civil service aspirants. The third intention is to create awareness with regard to civil service opportunities. Many students focus on professional courses while bureaucracy is not given importance though students have potential for clearing the exams, he said.
“There is no competition with others. The main objective rather is to add value to the institution and the region. We aim to better our past efforts,” said Fr Praveen Martis.
“The earlier programmes in the college were largely short term courses without aiming at a complete course. From the past civil services programmes, a need has been felt that the College should run a full-fledged course. The St. Aloysius Institute of Civil Services aims to impart training in prelims, mains and personal interview while bringing in the resource persons from across the country. We also give importance to overall growth of the students,” he said.
He further said, ”The Jesuits aim to empower the students of our region and other states to become administrators who are selfless, who like to be change agents or engines of change and spread the vision of the College to be men and women with and for others.”
“The fee structure is made affordable. Scholarships are provided to the needy, deserving and meritorious students. This sets the institute apart from other civil service academies,” added Fr Praveen Martis.
There has been a long standing demand from the civil society here to start a full-fledged training institute. While running the training programmes for civil service aspirants, students and parents within and outside the College have pressed for this demand.
St Aloysius Institute of Civil Services will start functioning from June. This will be a one year full time programme with hostel and library facilities. The Institute will also provide physical fitness facilities which are important in terms of building physical discipline. This is another aspect that sets the Institute apart from others, said Dr Praveen Martis.
“Our coordinators have created awareness across the region in about 36 educational institutions. We have conducted screening tests during the summers to take in the best students. We have admitted students from across the country. Though the focus is on building an interest in the profession of administration, the College welcomes students from across the country to be trained here,” he said.
“We have admitted students from all kinds of disciplines which includes those from engineering, medical, commerce, management, humanities, sciences etc. We are bringing trainers from within the College and outside. Resource persons are drawn from academia and industry from across the country. We are partnering with Alternative Learning System from Delhi,” said Praveen Martis.
The Institute would like to build a deep interest in civil services that has faced tremendous neglect so far. Secondly, the College positively looks towards better results. Third and most importantly, the College would like to capitalise on the intellectual infrastructure available in the region. There is a kind of herd mentality wherein students focus on courses like engineering, medicine etc. And we would like to break this herd mentality so that students go through less travelled roads. I expect our aspirants will bring name and fame to our region, concluded Dr Praveen Martis.
